NEWS RELEASE
HOMESTEAD & DISABILITY EXEMPTION INCREASED FOR 2009 & 2010
Jefferson county property owners who are 65 & older or disabled may qualify for a higher property tax break for 2009 and 2010
KRS 132.810 (2)(e) provides that the Homestead & Disability Exemptions shall be adjusted for inflation every two years. In accordance with this statute, the Office of Property Valuation of the Department of Revenue has determined $33,700 will be the Homestead & Disability Exemption amount for 2009 and 2010. This is a $2,300 increase from the 2007 and 2008 exemption amount. Property owners who are eligible to receive this exemption will receive a higher property tax break for 2009 and 2010.
Property owners who are 65 or older may be eligible to receive the Homestead Exemption. Those who currently receive the Homestead Exemption need not reapply. Property owners need to notify the PVA Office when they move, so the exemption can be transferred to their new property. Additionally, property owners who have been declared totally disabled for the previous 12 months by any public or private retirement system may be eligible for the Disability Exemption. This exemption must be verified annually, except for a service-connected totally disabled veteran of the United States Armed Forces; only need to apply once. If you are eligible for either exemption, the PVA will subtract the amount of the exemption from your property’s assessed value, so you will pay less property tax.
Applications are available online at www.pvalouky.org; click on Exemptions. They are also located at the Jefferson County PVA Office, Social Security Offices, and Local Government Centers.
